International Music MasterClass and Competition 2019   

    

Creativity, Solfeggio, Music Theory,   May 17 - 19, 2019   

    

IMMCC – Creativity, Solfeggio and Music Theory is an event in a form of competition with socialising, exchange of experiences and knowledge, intended for teachers and their students, who would like to upgrade their practical and theoretical knowledge gained in Music School, Art Gymnasium and Conservatoire and test themselves in categories Creativity, Solfeggio and Music Theory, which are in the domain of music education subjects that are essential and bridge different music spheres.   

This is the first meeting in a form of competition in Slovenia that includes creativity as a first impulsion of musical art strongly connected to recreation in all fields of music education. The event is supposed to encourage creative processes that are inevitably resorting to knowledge deepening, creativity and exploring.   

The preparation of the students for the event should encourage the link between knowledge and creative expression and achieving aims of curricula on the level of creativity. Furthermore, the students are given opportunity to express the gained knowledge in a unique, original way.    

   

Categories   

I, II, III, IV, V and VI – CREATIVITY. Each candidate is given access to electric piano, upright piano or piano. The candidate can bring his/her own instrument (the one, which he/she learned to play). Candidates in categories I and II will have 60 minutes to express their creativity, candidates in other categories 90 minutes. The candidate is left alone in a room to create. Mobile phones and other appliances are not allowed; neither is recording or photographing of the competition. The expert jury is going to classify the candidates regarding the product and provide descriptive evaluation. The candidates will be able to present their product in the closing gala concert.  

  

  

Ia, IIa, IIIa, IVa, Va and VIa – SOLFEGGIO (prima vista of melodic, rhythmic parlato and interval rehearsal). Candidate in categories Ia and IIa is given intonation by the corepetitor or by himself using the tuning fork. Candidates in other categories give the intonation exclusively to themselves using the tuning fork. The category Solfeggio is performed as a concert with audience. Mobile phones and other appliances are not allowed; neither is recording or photographing of the competition. The expert jury is going to evaluate the accuracy of the intonation, rhythmic certainty, sense of metre and musical elements in performances.   

  

Ib, IIb, IIIb, IVb, Vb and VIb – MUSIC THEORY (written test). Candidates in categories Ib and IIb will have 45 minutes to complete the test, candidates in categories IIIb, IVb, Vb and VIb 60 minutes. If a candidate finishes the test early, he/she is required to wait quietly and leave the room, when the time is up. Mobile phones and other appliances are not allowed; neither is recording or photographing of the competition. The expert jury is going to classify the candidates regarding the points that were gathered in the written test.    

 

Level 1 – Lower Music School 

I, Ia, Ib: pupils of 1. and 2. class (born 2009 or younger)  

II, IIa, IIb: pupils of 3. and 4. class (born 2008 or younger)  

III, IIIa, IIIb: pupils of 5. and 6. class (born 2006 or younger)  

IV, IVa, IVb: pupils of Solfeggio I and II (born 2004 or younger)  

  

When applying the candidates of 1st classes should submit enrolment certificate for the 1st class Music Theory in Music school, other candidates should send last year's certificate from which it can be seen the class of Music theory or Solfeggio. All candidates have to submit a copy of an identification document and payment confirmation of registration fee.   

 

Level 2 - Conservatoire and Art Gymnasium

V, Va, Vb: students of 1. and 2. grade (born 2002 or younger)  

VI, VIa, VIb: students of 3. and 4. grade (born 2000 or younger)  

  

When applying the candidates of 1. grades should submit enrolment certificate for 1. grade of Conservatoire or Secondary Music School/Art Gymnasium, other candidates should send last year's certificate from which it can be seen the class of Solfeggio. All candidates have to submit a copy of an identification document and payment confirmation of registration fee. 

  

A candidate can compete in different fields of a category. The registration fee for one field is 50 euros, for competing in two fields 80 euros and in three 120 euros. If a candidate does not compete, the organizer is not obligated to refund the registration fee.

Assessment and Prizes:  

90 – 100 points: golden recognition award 

80 – 90 points: silver recognition award 

70 – 80 points: bronze recognition award  

70 or less points: participation award  

  

An international team of expert jury consisting of three members is going to acknowledge and award the best candidates, who will be competing in all three categories, and the most promising participant in each category.  

  

 

Propositions  

  

Category I - Creativity 

  1. Continue a melody in C-major in 3/4 or 4/4 metre with a logical end on Tonic.  
  2. Add and underwrite an optional logical text to the melody of the first assignment.   

The usage of marks is optional (for example: for repetition, dynamical and agogical changes ...). 

  

Category Ia - Solfeggio  

Melodic exercise: in C-major in treble clef, 2/4 metre.   

Considered are note values and pauses to eight note, second division of a period and dotted quarter note in range c1 - c2. The candidate performs the melodic exercise with names of his/her choice (solmisation or alphabet) with takting or knocking of periods.   

Rhythmic exercise: in 4/4 metre.   

Considered are note values and pauses to eight note, second division of a period, quarter note and dotted half note. The candidate performs the rhythmic exercise with takting or knocking of periods with a syllable of his/her choice.   

Parlato: in C, G or F major in bass clef in ¾ metre.   

Considered are note values and pauses to eight note, second division of a period, quarter note and dotted half note in range c - f1. The candidate performs the parlato exercise with names of his/her choice (solmisation or alphabet) with takting or knocking of periods.   

 

Category Ib – Music Theory  

Hearing and writing recognition: 1 and ½ notes in treble and bass clef from c – c3. Octave sorts c – c3 with sharp and flat note values. C, G and F-major. Addition of tonal height and note values in melodic (C, G or F-major) and rhythmic dictation in 2/4 or ¾ or 4/4, considered are all note values and pauses to sixteenth note. Recognition of basic marks for dynamics and tempo. Hearing recognition of instruments from all six instrument families (piano, organs, accordion, violin, cello, double bass, trumpet, tuba, side-blown flute, clarinet, saxophone, guitar, harp, timpani, snare drum, xylophone). 

Rhythmic and melodic dictation is dictated two times per one measure bar. The third time it is connected to following bar. In the beginning and in the end whole dictation is played. Whole and half notes are going to be played two times.  

  

Category II - Creativity 

  1. Set lyrics to music (riddle or counting rhyme) in 2/4 or 3/8 metre, in optional tonality with at least one symbol. Upbeat is allowed.  
  2. Add accompaniment for one optional rhythmic instrument. Underwrite the text.

Category IIa – Solfeggio 

Melodic exercise: in minors (all three scales) to two symbols (sharp, flat), 6/8 metre.   

Considered are note values and pauses to sixteenth note, in range a – c2. The candidate performs the melodic exercise with names of his/her choice (solmisation or alphabet) with takting or knocking of periods.    

Rhythmic exercise: in 4/4 metre.   

Considered are note values and pauses to sixteenth note, rhythmic exception syncope and triplet. The candidate performs the rhythmic exercise with takting or knocking of periods with a syllable of his/her choice.   

Parlato: in tonality (major + all forms of minor) to two symbols (sharp, flat) in 3/2 metre in bass clef.   

Considered are note values and pauses to eight note, quarter note, half note and dotted whole note in range C – f1. The candidate performs the parlato exercise with names of his/her choice (solmisation or alphabet) with takting or knocking of periods.   

  

Category IIb – Music Theory  

Hearing and writing recognition: all major scales with sharps and flats, all forms of minor to four symbols in range C – c3 with triads on main levels, major/melodic, minor, natural and harmonic tetrachord, all intervals from aug4 or dim5 up and down, major and minor triads up and down, augmented and diminished triad up. Transposition, addition of tonal heights and note values in melodic dictation (a, d, e, h, g-minor) in 6/8 metre and rhythmic dictation in 4/4 metre. Hearing recognition of vocal (children's, youth, male, female, mixed choir) and instrumental casts (orchestra: symphony, wind, string, Orff). 

Rhythmic and melodic dictation is dictated two times per two bars. The third time it is connected to following two bars. In the beginning and in the end whole dictation is played. Intervals and triads are going to be played 1x separate – 1x together – 1x separate.   

  

Category III - Creativity 

  1. On the given rhythm, 8 bars, in ¾ or 6/8 metre write a melody in any form of optional chosen minor tonality.  
  2. Continue and develop on your own (for example 8 or 16 bars) a theme and motif of a known composer (for example 2 or 4 bars).

Category IIIa – Solfeggio  

Melodic exercise: in tonality to 4 symbols (major and all forms of minor) in 4/4 metre.   

Considered are note values and pauses to sixteenth note, rhythmic exception syncope and triplet, in range g – e2 and altered and traverse tones. The candidate performs the melodic exercise with names of his/her choice (solmisation or alphabet) with takting or knocking of periods.    

Rhythmic exercise: in 5/8 metre.   

Considered are note values and pauses to sixteenth note. The candidate performs the rhythmic exercise with takting or knocking of periods with a syllable of his choice.   

Parlato: in tonality (major + all forms of minor) to four symbols in 6/8 metre.   

Considered are note values and pauses to sixteenth note, quarter note and dotted half note in range C – c3, in treble or bass clef. The candidate performs the parlato exercise with names of his/her choice (solmisation or alphabet) with takting or knocking of periods.   

  

Category IIIb – Music Theory  

Hearing and writing recognition: all major and minor scales in circle of fifths in range C – c3, with triads on main degrees, all intervals from prima to octave up and down, majors, minors, augmented and diminished triads up and down, inversions of all basic triads up, D7 with turn up. Transposition, addition of tonal heights and note values in rhythmic dictation in 6/8 metre and melodic dictation (majors and minors to four symbols) in 4/4 metre. Hearing recognition of vocal casts (choirs, solos), instrumental casts (orchestra, solos, chamber) and specification of binary/ternary, major/minor and marks for tempo. 

Rhythmic and melodic dictation is dictated two times per two bars. The third time it is connected to following two bars. In the beginning and in the end whole dictation is played. Intervals and triads with inversions and seventh chords are going to be played 1x separate – 1x together – 1x separate.   

  

Category IV - Creativity 

  1. Create two variations on the given theme (8 bars).  
  2. Harmonize the given melody (8 bars) in tonality to two symbols. Starting points are triads and inversions in degrees of major and all three minor scales, with triads writing and marking of degrees – optional.

Category IVa - Solfeggio  

Melodic exercise: in Dorian mode in 4/4 metre.   

Considered are note values and pauses to sixteenth note in range a – d2, rhythmic exception syncope and triplet. The candidate performs the melodic exercise with names of his/her choice (solmisation or alphabet) with takting or knocking of periods.    

Rhythmic exercise: in mixed basic metres.   

Considered are note values and pauses to sixteenth note, rhythmic exception syncope and triplet. The candidate performs the rhythmic exercise with takting or knocking of periods with a syllable of his/her choice.   

Parlato: in tonality (major + all forms of minor) to four symbols in 3/4 metre.   

Considered are note values and pauses to sixteenth note, rhythmic exception syncope and triplet, in range C – c3, in treble or bass clef. The candidate performs the parlato exercise with names of his/her choice (solmisation or alphabet) with takting or knocking of periods.   

  

Category IVb – Music Theory  

Hearing and writing recognition: all major and minor scales in circle of fifths, mode with character interval, whole note and chromatic scale, all intervals from prima to octave up and down, majors, minors, augmented and diminished triads with inversions up and down, the dominant seventh chord with inversions up, major seventh chord, augmented major seventh chord, minor seventh chord, minor major seventh chord, diminished seventh chord and half-diminished seventh chord up in range C-c3. 

Rhythmic dictation in 3/2 metre and melodic dictation (Dorian mode) in 4/4 metre.  

Hearing recognition: specification of a solo instrument, instrument accompanied by orchestra, choir, choir and orchestra, chamber casts (string quartet, wind quintet, ...) and specification of major and/or minor, binary and/or ternary, and marks of tempo. 

Rhythmic and melodic dictation is dictated two times per two bars. The third time it is connected to following two bars. In the beginning and in the end whole dictation is played. Intervals and triads with inversions and seventh chords are going to be played 1x separate – 1x together. Scales (relative hearing recognition) are going to be played 2x up and down.  

  

Category V – Creativity 

  1. Choose one of three given motives and develop it to a logical complete unit.  
  2. Harmonize the given melody (8 bars). Starting point are chords and turns on stages in major or all three minor scales with chord record and marking of degrees – optional. 

The usage of music forms, the length of the composition and marks is optional (for example: for repetition, dynamical and agogical changes ...).  

  

Category Va - Solfeggio  

Melodic exercise: in one of tonalities of the circle of fifths in 6/8 metre.   

Considered are note values and pauses to sixteenth note in range g – e2, altered and traverse tones. The candidate performs the melodic exercise with names of his/her choice (solmisation or alphabet) with takting or knocking of periods.    

Interval exercise (singing of 8 bars) 

Rhythmic exercise: in mixed basic metres.   

Considered are note values and pauses to sixteenth note, rhythmic exception syncope, duplets and triplet. The candidate performs the rhythmic exercise with takting or knocking of periods with a syllable of his/her choice.   

Parlato: in tonality to five symbols in mixed (5/8 ali 7/8) metre.   

Considered are note values and pauses to sixteenth note, triplet, in range C – f1. In treble or bass clef. The candidate performs the parlato exercise with names of his/her choice (solmisation or alphabet) with takting or knocking of periods.   

  

Category Vb – Music Theory  

Hearing and writing recognition: all major and minor scales in circle of fifths, modes, whole note and chromatic scale, all intervals – also upper and lower from prima and octave up and down, majors, minors, augmented and diminished triads with inversions up and down, the dominant seventh chord with turns up and down, major seventh chord, minor seventh chord, minor major seventh chord, augmented major seventh chord, minor seventh chord, half diminished seventh chord and diminished seventh chord up. 

Rhythmic dictation in 5/8 metre and melodic dictation in 3/2 metre.  

Hearing recognition: specification of instrumental and/or vocal casts and specification of major and/or minor, binary and/or ternary, and marks of tempo and placing it in a historic period of music. 

Rhythmic and melodic dictation is dictated two times per two bars. The third time it is connected to following two bars. In the beginning and in the end whole dictation is played. Intervals and triads with inversions and seventh chords are going to be played 1x separate – 1x together. Scales are going to be played 2x up and down.  

  

Category VI – Creativity 

Choose one assignment and solve it.  

  

1. Choose one of the three given motives and develop it to a logical complete unit. Harmonize the composition.  

The usage of music forms, the length of the composition and marks is optional (for example: for repetition, dynamical and agogical changes ...).  

OR 

2. Choose and observe a picture (photograph). Create a song. Use rhythmic, melodic and harmonic elements.

Category VIa - Solfeggio  

Melodic exercise: in one of tonalities of the circle of fifths in 3/2 metre.   

Considered are note values and pauses to eight note, rhythmic exception triplet, syncope, changeable alternation and modulation. The candidate performs the rhythmic exercise with takting or knocking of periods with a syllable of his/her choice. 

Interval exercise (singing of 8 bars) 

Rhythmic exercise: in mixed metres.   

Considered are note values and pauses to thirty-second note, rhythmic exception syncope, duplet, triplet and quadruplets. The candidate performs the melodic exercise with names of his/her choice (solmisation or alphabet) with takting or knocking of periods.    

Parlato: in all tonalities in mixed metres.   

Considered are note values and pauses to thirty-second note. Rhythmic exception syncope, duplet, triplet and quadriplets. In treble, bass, tenor or alto clef. The candidate performs the parlato exercise with names of his/her choice (solmisation or alphabet) with takting or knocking of periods.   

  

Category VIb – Music Theory  

Hearing and writing recognition: all tonalities in the circle of fifths, modes, whole note and chromatic scale, all intervals – also upper and lower from prima and tenth up and down, majors, minors, augmented and diminished triads with inversions up and down, the dominant seventh chord with inversions up and down, major seventh chord, minor seventh chord with inversions up and down, minor major seventh chord, augmented major seventh chord, half diminished seventh chord and diminished seventh chord up. 

Rhythmic dictation in 4/4 metre and two-voice melodic dictation in 3/4 metre.  

Hearing recognition: specification of instrumental and/or vocal casts and specification of major and/or minor, binary and/or ternary, tempo and placing it in a historic period of music. 

Rhythmic and melodic dictation is dictated two times per two bars. The third time it is connected to following two bars. In the beginning and in the end whole dictation is played. Intervals and triads with inversions and seventh chords are going to be played 2x together. Scales are going to be played 1x up and down.
